This week’s word is inspired by my fellow writer Charlotte Frost, whose latest work in progress is provisionally entitled Death, Debt and Debentures. When I met Charlotte and first heard this title, I was intrigued. Then—quite rapidly—my ego bubble was pricked as I realised I had only a hazy idea of what a debenture might be.
So here’s enlightenment, courtesy of my Chambers Dictionary app. If you’re anything like me, you’ll enjoy this word and immediately start over using it. But that’s part of what writing’s all about, isn’t it? The pleasure of language.
